Bucket List

Let me present my bucket list!

There are so many things I want to do and experience in my life before I kick the bucket.  Some things are places I want to see, some are things I want to accomplish or become and some are pure fun.  All of these things will enrich my life and create memories to cherish.

Number 1

Family is important.  I have been fortunate to grow up in a loving family with my parents and two younger sisters.  I look forward to starting a family of my own and having the experience of creating life and becoming a mom.

Number 2

Yoga is a passion of mine.  I love how the poses help relax me and keeps my body strong and healthy.  Life can be stressful and yoga helps me cope with that stress.  I want to share this with others and open my own yoga studio. Come visit me when I do!

Number 3

I began traveling when I was a teenager and have been doing it ever since. I love experiencing new places and seeing new sights.  My travel has helped keep my sense of adventure alive and created self-confidence.  I have visited 45 countries so far and look forward to seeing more.

Number 4

I love seeing things from the air.  The idea of coasting high up in the sky in a huge balloon is something I've always wanted to try.

Number 5

The sounds of waves crashing on the shore, the salty smell in the air, the sight on sand and palm trees are some of my favorite things.  To wake up next to the sea every day would be heaven for me.

Number 6

I am Canadian but I have seen more of the world than my own country. Canada is such a big country that so far I haven't seen all of it.  I would like to drive from coast to coast one day, preferably in the summer and in a convertible or a Winnebago.

Number 7

Anyone who knows me would say I love to talk.  Languages are fascinating to me and although I speak English as my native language I would love to also speak French fluently.  The sound of French is pleasant to me and reminds me of cheese and chocolate.

Number 8

Did you know the Northern lights arecalled aurora borealis? Aurora is Latin and means sunrise or godness of dawn and borealis is the Greek name for the north wind.  This phenomena looks spectauclar in pictures and I can't wait to see them with my own eyes.

Number 9

Have you heard of Mardi Gras? It is a festival in New Prlens, USA held once a year usually in February.  There are parades with intricate costumes and magnificient floats, live music and excitement.

Number 10

I have always wanted to see a movie sitting in my car with the night sky and stars. I love the outdoors and movies so experiencing both of these things together would be perfect.

I look forward to checking things off my list and enriching my life with these experiences.  As I complete each thing and check it off my list, I will feel a sense of accomplishment and pride.

Photo Essay: A Journey through Time & Places

It is said that everything has a beginning and an end.  A journey starts and eventually ends but the memories it impresses on our minds and hearts are everlasting.  My journey began in Canada and has ended in Korea.   Along the way I have rode a camel to the Great Pyramids in Egypt, went on a safari in Kenya, took a flight to Mount Everest, set turtles free in Sri Lanka, witnessed orangutans in their natural habitat in Borneo and tried rock climbing in the jungles of Laos.  The journey has been all a great journey should be: memorable, exciting, dangerous, challenging, fun and life-changing.

I'll start this journey at the most logical place: the beginning.  Or shall I say my beginning.  My journey started in Halifax, Nova Scotia.  Halifax is a small city on the East Coast of Canada.  The beach is never more than 20 minutes drive away, it's air is clean and fresh and its people friendly and warm.  It is here that I learned to appreciate sleeping in a tent, the numb feeling of jumping into the Atlantic oceans icy waters (despite it being summer), and the warm hospitality of Haligonians.  My city is known for fresh seafood like lobster and mussels, Tall Ships as it's a port city, the Halifax Explosion of December 6, 1917 where two ships collided in the harbor and live music.

Bagpiper plays at Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia

One of the most picturesque places in Nova Scotia is Peggy's Cove.  The lighthouse seen here contains a post office.  This was also the sight of the Swiss Air Flight 111 that crashed here on September 2, 1998.  All 229 passengers aboard died in the waters surrounding the lighthouse.  Despite this tragedy, Peggy's Cove remains one of the most popular places to visit in Nova Scotia.  The sounds of waves crashing on the rocks, salty spray in your nose and warm seafood chowder in your belly.

From salty air to arid, dusty desert.  I traveled to Egypt to see one of the wonders of the world; the Great Pyramids of Giza.  The adventure began on top of a camel.  My camel was named Mickey Mouse but as you can see had no resemblance to the Disney character.  Mickey Mouse was well-mannered but could have used a bath.  In the sweltering heat of the Giza desert, the putrid smell of my camel added to the discomfort of being in the hot, afternoon sun that seemed to pierce through my skin.  As we rode on however, the magnificent pyramids come into focus and all discomfort was forgotten.  The pyramids left no question as to why they are one of the seven wonders of the world.

Adventure got ahold of me after Egypt and I yearned for more.  This search brought me to Africa, a land that promises adventure from the grandeur of Victoria Falls, the amazement of Mount Kilimanjaro and the exotic animals, open plains and nature at its best witnessed on a safari in the Serengeti National Park of Kenya.  As we rode through the plains in an open-air jeep, the sounds of lions roaring, elephants stomping and hyenas laughing echoed across the plains. Lions stalking their prey, towering giraffes gracefully nibbling on the leaves of high branches and gazelles being hunted by great cheetahs that ran so fast they were a blur before your eyes.  The experiences of a safari in Africa is one that words can not describe but rather one to be seen and heard in person.

My next destination brought me to a place known for one of the most vast and challenging mountain ranges, Nepal.  The country was like stepping back in time.  Old antique foot-operated sewing machines, wells for water and undeveloped terrain.  Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world, standing at a staggering 8,848 meters above sea level.  Unlike most, my dream was not to hike Everest instead I waited to fly to it.  I boarded the 24 passenger Buddha Air flight to take the shortest flight of my life to witness the most spectacular sight I've seen to this day from a plane: the Himalayas mountain range and Mount Everest.  One by one passengers were allowed to go into the cockpit with the pilot to get shots of the vast mountains that surrounded us.

The Himalayas & Mount Everest in Nepal

Tea hills rolling along the mountain sides, winding roads that caused car sickness, unique wildlife and long, stretches of beaches is what awaited me in Sri Lanka.  Sri Lanka has suffered from civil unrest until 2009 and parts of the country were closed to tourists.  I liked that this country was new to tourists which meant it was largely untouched.  Many beaches in Sri Lanka are home to five types of marine turtles. However, many of these turtles are facing extinction due to predators, as well as people taking turtle eggs for food.  To protect the turtles, conservation efforts have created hatcheries to try to replenish the dying out breeds.  The baby turtles are then released to the sea at dusk to help increase their chances of survival.  While I was there, I had the incredible experience of releasing these baby turtles into the sea.  It was a memorable and unique experience.

Visiting a turtle hatchery in Sri Lanka

Wildlife as well as travel is fascinating to me.  I love seeing animals in their natural habitat interacting with each other.  One of the most interesting animals is the orangutan as they are so close to humans in their mannerisms and behavior.  Watching an orangutan care for its baby is strikingly similar to us.   I visited an sanctuary in Borneo where I observed several orangutans going about their day oblivious to the stares from us, their observers.  The size and strength of these animals impressed me as I watched them swing effortlessly from tree to tree with a baby on their back.

Daring feats like bungee jumping or skydiving have not been alluring to me.  In Laos however, I stepped out of my comfort zone and tried zip lining through the tree tops of the Laotian jungle.  Sailing through the air suspended from a cord was exhilarating and terrifying all at once.  The adrenaline starts pumping and you feel truly free.  The adventure ended with rock climbing up a steep cliff, this was an accomplishment for me and I'm thankful for the experience as I faced a fear and survived to share it!

Like all beginnings comes endings.  The last of this journey has brought me to a place I've called home for the past eight years; Seoul, Korea. It is here that I've discovered what I want to do in life and who I really am.  From the balcony of my home I see Namsan Tower each night.  The color of the tower changes and my favorite one is blue.  Sometimes when the light is just right I can capture the colors of the sunset on the tower and it makes me smile.

The journey has been a great one. It has shaped me.  It has challenged me.  It has brought my to places I had only read about in books and shown me things I had only seen on television.  It has made an impression on me as I hope it will on you.

Tails from a dog

My first memories include her.  Soft always thinks of me first.  As soon as her eyes open, she is looking for me and I am waiting for her.   She pats my head and speaks in her soft, calming voice.  I know what comes next, its walk time.  She reminds me to stay close to her as we venture outside for our morning walk.  I love this part of the day.  Just me and Soft.  Soft has been my human since the beginning.  She is always walking me, feeding me and playing with me.  She even gives me bones to eat and when I’m really lucky bacon.  Bacon is my favorite.

As the wind hits my fur I feel free.  Today I decide that I want to run.  I start off slowly and Soft reminds me not to go too far.  I listen at first.  I run then stop, run and stop.  As I look ahead of me I see trees and I just want to reach them.

Before I know it I am sprinting ahead.  Soft’s voice is faint now; I realize I can’t hear her anymore.  Just then a sound startles me.  I’m not sure what the sound is or where it is coming from.  As I turn to see what the sound is…

Welcome to Blogging!

Dear GLPS 20 Writing Students,

Welcome to KMLA! The summer camp has commenced and we are going to be busy preparing for the first week and setting up our own personal blogspot.
The first step in our writing adventure is to set up your very own blogspot.  Your blog is an effective tool to share your writing with your teacher, other students as well as your parents and friends. Anyone can read your blog and also leave comments for you which will, in turn, help improve your writing skills and give you feedback along the way.

Here are some tips to help you on your way to becoming a "Blogging Idol":

  • Your parents are going to see it. Keep this in mind when you are writing and take pride in your work.
  • Blog anytime, anywhere. You can write anything you want when you have a chance. This is a great opportunity to practice your writing so use your skills to share your experiences at camp, tell people about yourself, share your speeches, keep your parents in the loop about what you are learning or anything else you can think of.
  • Think about presentation! You want your blog to be interesting for people to see and read. Experiment with fonts, pictures, videos and your layout. Remember to keep your blog neat and clean and try to avoid cluttering it with too many distracting gadgets.
  • GLPS will award the "Blogging Idol" for the best bloggers at the end of camp. Strive for the best! It is wonderful to get recognition for a job well-done so try to do your best and good luck. I will be doing "Shoutouts" each week to the best bloggers.
The blog you create here will be a network connecting you to your classmates here at GLPS 20. Through our blogs we can get to know each other and share our thoughts and creativity with each other. And the best thing is that you can continue to blog even after we say goodbye to each other at the end of camp, and I hope you do!

From now on, use this blog as often as you can. Write about your experiences and share ideas and thoughts with myself and your fellow classmates. Read each other's work and give feedback through comments. I look forward to reading all of your work throughout the camp.

After you have setup your blog, please leave a comment under this post. I will add a link to your blog on my page so you will be able to visit other students blogs and make comments.

Your comment should look like this:

    Name: Songhee Kim
    Class: 17

    Blog URL: glps18.blogspot.com

  •
    Good luck and start blogging!
